Who am I?
Hi, I’m Ciaran Thapar.
Over the last decade I’ve been a youth worker, educator and consultant based in London. I’ve worked across youth services, schools and the criminal justice system in a variety of roles, from frontline facilitator to programme manager to expert witness.
I have specialised in understanding and trying to prevent social exclusion and violence amongst children and young people. I am Director of Public Affairs and Communications at the Youth Endowment Fund. My book, Cut Short: Why We’re Failing Our Youth — and How to Fix It — a story about my youth work in south London spanning 2015-2020 — was published by Penguin UK (Viking) in 2021.
I have written extensively about British society, music culture and issues affecting young people for the Guardian, BBC, British GQ and more. I teach a monthly course called Writing for Social Impact at City, University of London. I am planning my next book, a memoir about British Punjabi life in the UK.
All City is a space for readers to access my writing about the above themes and more, and to support me to create original work on my own terms.
